A trains and Triumphs event is being held at the South Devon Railway's Buckfastleigh station on Sunday.

Starting at 10am, the event is being organised by Peter and Jane Christie from the Devon TR Register and Sue and John Franklin, the Devon area organisers of the Triumph Sports Six Club.

Sue Franklin said: "All Triumph car and motorcycle owners are invited to turn up. There is no fee, no booking just come along and enjoy the company of fellow Triumph enthusiasts.

"This is the second year we have held the event and last year we were delighted when more than 40 cars came along, and we would like to beat that number this year if we can."

Last year's event was supported by local members of the Triumph Sports Six Club, the TR Register, the Stag Owners Club, the Dolomite Club and the 2000 Register, as well as a number of Triumph owners not aligned to any particular club.

"Everyone will be made welcome for a fun day, when you can come and go as you please, and take advantage of a steam day at the South Devon Railway too,," said Ms Franklin.

In addition, members of the Devon Area of the Stag Owners Club will be there from around 10am to 11am taking part in the Round Britain trip of SOCrates, the mascot of the Stag Owners Club, which is undertaking this mammoth relay trip to celebrate the 40th birthday of the Triumph Stag in 2010.

Sorates will be travelling on to Cornwall later in the day, before being handed back to Devon members the following week, for onward transmission on July 3 to Somerset and Dorset members.

Bikers roar into new territory.

________________
Image source: Free Pictures of Spain

The popularity of Bob Minion's bank holiday motorcycle tours of Northern France shows no sign of diminishing with the latest trip's clientele, comprising 36 bikers, being the largest for many years.
"Around 70% of the bikers were repeat customers," said Mark Minion, sales director of the Derby Honda dealership, which has been organising continental tours for more than 10 years.
"The reason our trips are so popular is quite simple - no worries. We take care of everything, including the ferry, good quality accommodation, escort to the base in France and a choice of pre-planned interesting routes in the region to enjoy with the benefit of an experienced guide.
"This means there are no hassles and the bikers can relax and fully enjoy the pleasure of riding through the beautiful French countryside.
The fact that you are with a bunch of friendly bikers is another big plus."
On this occasion the group was based in Dinan, an enchanting, medieval town and an ideal location for exploring the north-west region of Brittany. From here the bikers enjoyed ride-outs over three days to the historic U-boat pens at St Nazaire, the famous port of St Malo, attractive seaside towns, the bustling cathedral city of Rennes, the cosmopolitan coastal resort of Dinard, parts of Normandy, and the surrounding area. Despite having previously visited France on Bob Minion trips, Bill Cove and his wife Vivian can never get over how beautiful the countryside is, the low volume of traffic and how considerate car drivers tend to be.

A look at some Of the different motorcycle engines.

Image source: Free Pictures of Spain

Motorcycles have been around for more than ten decades. During this time, motorcycle engines have developed through tweaking and reworking items to get the best performance. There have been more than one dozen engines, but some never met with success. Cost efficiency and customer satisfaction brought failure to a number of motorcycle engines.

All motorcycle engines are fueled by gasoline. To best understand engine types, it is important to understand how an engine works.

A pole called a rod cranks inside the engine and creates a draft that pulls both gasoline and air into a chamber called the cylinder. Inside the cylinder, a piston and rod quickly move up to push the gasoline and air into a smaller space where it meets the spark plug. The spark plug produces a spark between its two metal pieces.

Once the spark plug gives off a spark, the gasoline and air explode. This pushes the piston down, which in turn drives the belt or chain. This action is called torque. The movement of the belt or chain causes the rear wheel of the motorcycle to revolve. A motorcycle's performance is determined by how many cylinders are inside the engine and how they are arranged.

Single cylinder engine:

A single cylinder engine has one cylinder and one piston. Single cylinder engines are used in all off road motorcycles. The single cylinder provides a lot of torque, but also a load of vibration. The vibration is loud and one of the qualities that dirt bike race fans crave during a race.

Twin cylinder engine:

Logically, twin cylinder engines have two cylinders. The cylinders are placed together at an angle. Usually the cylinders are positioned at a 90 degree angle, but there are exclusions to that standard. A twin cylinder engine produces more power because there is more torque and more fuel used. Twin cylinder engines do not vibrate as much as a single cylinder engine.

Now, as stated above, there are exceptions. The boxed or boxer design finds cylinders placed side by side. This produces even less vibration, but adds a new issue. The cylinders tend to jut out the side of the bike, which makes it hard to take sharp corners. Another issue is the tremendous heat that the cylinders project; it makes leg protection a necessary evil.

Triple Cylinder Engines

A three cylinder engine finds the cylinders included in a head. This type of engine offers a load of power, but it also requires more parts. Each cylinder requires an additional fuel injector and carburetor. The more cylinders included on an engine, the higher the engine RPM. More RPM means more power. Triumph makes motorcycles using three cylinders and boy can they fly!

Four Cylinder Engines

The four cylinder engine is just like the three cylinder engine only it has the additional cylinder and therefore weighs more. As is true of any engine, more cylinders equal more power and smoother sailing.

It is important to consider how much size and power you require in your motorcycle. If you are taking your bike off road, you need a bike with plenty of torque and a low rpm to make it up hills and quickly navigate corners. For off roading, stick with a single cylinder. A double cylinder is your second choice.

If your main purpose for riding a motorcycle is riding through traffic and along roads, do not purchase a bike with less than a twin cylinder engine, although a three or four cylinder engine is a better idea.

Mini motorcycle choppers, fan for all the family.

These mini motorcycle choppers have really become all the rage for children and adult's alike. They are that one-step above a toy so to speak that teenagers and adults have come to enjoy for their own. You can buy these mini motorcycle choppers in the form of the most popular Harley Davidson style or in fact just about any other style that you may wish for.

Many people opt to have their minichopper custom made to their own specs and plans. It just depends on what you are looking for in a mini bike. If you are a mechanic or are handy in that field you can even build your own. There are plenty of plans and blue prints for sale especially on the Internet.

Depending on what country and or state you live in there will be differing rules and regulations for riding these great little bikes. Some places demand that you must be licensed to ride on the road while others say because the motors are of a smaller size you may ride them on the road without a license.

As much fun as these are they do need the rider to be responsible as some of these bikes can go very fast. In fact some can go up to 60 miles an hour using 4 stroke engines. Children should always be advised on riding them safely and preferably not on the road, as they are not very visual for other vehicles to always see them. But on the other hand the majority of these mini motorcycle choppers are ridden by adults and teenagers.

They really are a lot of fun and they look fantastic. You can pick them up for a reasonable price especially online. They are sold fully assembled or you can assemble them yourself. Don't forget the option of buying a used one either.

Gas Scooters - One Means Of Transport Which Is Easy On Your Wallet.

Because of the high cost of fueling and car repairs, some people have turned to a gas scooter as an alternative form of transportation. They were first introduced to the public in the 1940's. After a decline, they have been getting more popular since about 2000.

One of the reasons for the surge of popularity is because gas scooters have a reputation of being easy on the wallet. This is a well-deserved reputation as they get approximately fifty to seventy miles per gallon. If you know a scooter owner, you will undoubtedly hear stories of how infrequently they have to fill up the gas tank.

Other reasons for the gas scooters being so popular are because of the cost. Depending on where they are purchased, they are only from about $800 to $6,000. This price is very attractive to people who cannot afford a car or even a motorcycle. They can reach acceptable speeds to keep up with traffic and still get great gas mileage.

Women are a big part of the gas scooter revolution. The lightweight and maneuverability make them a very real option to getting on a motorcycle. But women are not the only ones who use them for this reason. Smaller men or those who cannot comfortably get on to or off of a motorcycle will find this a viable option. Or, if the typical motorcycle to wide to sit on for a long time, the scooter is usually narrower and will make for a more comfortable ride.

Ease of parking is another benefit to scooters. It is so compact, that parking, even tight parallel parking, is no problem for the rider of a scooter.

Those other entire reasons aside, the gas scooter is just plain fun. In very recent memory, scooters have become more of a trend in some areas than necessity. Even motorcycle groups have jumped on the bandwagon, so to speak, and have started offering safety courses and comparing models. Freedom and convince are two of the traits enjoyed by scooter owners.

Major, well-known brands like Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda manufacture the bulk of the scooters on the road today. Piaggio is also a well-known name that owns Vespa and Aprilia. These are the ones you will see on surface streets in the cities.

As we look into the future, it is easy to see that we will be sharing the road with scooters, just as we do motorcycles today. They are easy on the wallet as well as on gas. They have a wonderful niche that will just keep getting bigger as time goes on. This is definitely a mode of transportation that will keep growing in popularity.

Summary:

Many people are turning to gas scooters as a means of transportation due to the rise in fuel prices. They are lightweight and very maneuverable, which makes them attractive to women and people with physical limitations. They are very cost effective and trendy.

All Motorcycle Riders Aren't Hell's Angels, A Look At Reality.

It is a common belief that motorcycle clubs are formed to commit horrible acts of crime and terrorize neighborhoods. Thankfully, this is rarely the case. One or two notorious groups (think Hell's Angels) have painted a stark image of motorcycling.

In reality, there are thousands of groups in the world today. Starting in 1903, the Yonkers Motorcycle Club was formed. The group met to share their love of motorcycles. The Yonkers Motorcycle Club is the oldest of its kind. San Francisco followed suit a short while later. These two dominated the scene until the 1950s when more groups formed.

There are dozens of motorcycle groups throughout the United States and Canada. Sizes vary greatly from just three or four members to hundreds of members. Membership can be open or limited to only approved applicants. Many show their pride in motorcycling by creating jackets or shirts with their club logo.

Even today, new groups form daily. All it takes is for a few people to find they have common ground whether it is a passion for the area where they ride or the style of motorcycle they ride. Motorcycle clubs can focus on one specific model, the riders' profession, a love for mountain roads, or dozens of other reasons.

There are many clubs scattered throughout the world. The Saskatchewan Motorcycle Club in Canada spends their time touring Canada's remote areas. Harley Davidson Clubs meet to share their passion for the Harley Davidson brand. Vespa Riders of Rome spend their time cruising the city streets. Florida Brothers Of The Bike cruise the beaches of Daytona. These are only a few of the groups out there.

Women find a niche for themselves in the Women On Wheels Motorcycle Association. This women-only group has more than 100 chapters throughout the United States, Canada, and Switzerland. These adventurous women plan their routes in advance and then explore new areas as a team.

Police and military groups are also common. As police and military units have relied on motorcycles since World War I, it is not surprising that they would form their own clubs dedicated to the machine that makes their job easier.

Regardless of the group, the rules never change. The important factor is having fun in a safe manner. Motorcycle riders will team up to help others repair their motorcycle, find pleasing routes to take, and even recommend restaurants who cater to bikers.

The knowledge that comes from motorcycle club members is tremendous. You can guarantee that this brotherhood will tell you where to find the least expensive parts, greatest destinations, and best hotels. Advice is happily given and someone always has an answer to your question. For these reasons, motorcycle groups are key to enjoying and sharing your passion.

Motorized trikes can be powered with a variety of methods, including motorcycle engines.

Motorcycle riders in the UK must normally take a one-day Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course, regardless of which class of motorcycle they intend to ride.[6] In addition a theory test must be taken prior to taking a practical test for any type of motorcycle licence.

Entry level to motorcycling at age 16 is the moped, a motorcycle of engine capacity no greater than 50 cc restricted to a maximum design speed of 50 km/h (31 mph).

At age 17 the rider may have a "light motorcycle" with an engine up to 125 cc and a power output not exceeding 11 kW (15 hp). Only a CBT certificate, obtained within the past two years, and a provisional licence is needed to ride a learner motorcycle with an L-plate. After passing a test on a 125 cc machine, riders will be restricted to ride a "large restricted motorcycle", which has a maximum power output of 25 kW (34 hp). After two years this restriction is lifted and any size or power of motorcycle may be ridden.

For riders over age 21 there is a direct access route to gaining a licence to ride a "large motorcycle" of any engine capacity or power, which allows somebody with no motorcycle experience to train and pass a test in around five days.

Three-wheeled vehicles weighing less than 8 cwt (896 lb / 406 kg) were long classified as motorcycles in the UK and could be driven with a full motorcycle licence. A requirement there be no reverse gear fitted was dropped in the 1960s. This exemption was linked to the enduring popularity of three-wheeled vehicles in the UK (such as the Reliant Regal van) but was abolished for new licence holders in October 2000. Mass-production of three-wheelers ceased in 1998 but the licensing exemption still benefits trikes and their riders.

Don't Get Upside Down On Your Motorcycle Loan.

Triumph Trident T150
Author:Gérard Delafond, source:http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Trident_face.jpg

When I was in the automotive industry I saw the extension of car loans going into 54, then 60, then 72 months and with the extension of the loan installments came the inevitable negative equity. In general the longer the term you finance for the more likely you are to find yourself "upside down". The motorcycle industry is no stranger to this as well and recently with the motorcycle finance companies offering loans that extend payments out as far as 72 months the problem is just getting worse. This is even more common with motorcycles that depreciate rapidly.

Just as with automotive loans when you extend the payments out over more than three years you begin to put yourself in a situation where your debt exceeds the value of your motorcycle. This is even more true if you do not put money down or even worse if you trade in a bike that you still owe on.

But how does this happen and what can be done to prevent it?

To begin with you need to look at the way the lender determines the interest. Some lenders use the rule of 78 in which you will be paying almost all interest at the beginning of the loan and then you have the other more preferable method of simple interest.

With an installment plan set up on a rule of 78 interest calculation you will be paying almost pure interest for the first couple of years and therefore will have virtually nothing in the way of equity. When you consider that statistically the average motorcycle owner trades bikes more often than every two years you can begin to see how this can be a problem.

The interest computation of choice is simple interest; as a matter of fact I personally would accept no other option. The way simple interest works is that it is calculated on the balance of the loan and if you keep the length of the loan at a reasonable time frame you will not run into the negative equity problem. If you extend the payments out over more than four years you will still get yourself in trouble just as you will if you skip payments.

If you have found yourself in a negative equity or upside down situation with your motorcycle don't feel like there is no way out. A lot of people just give up and allow their bike to be repossessed and sold off at auction which just exacerbates their problem, now you owe money on a bike that you don't have and can't ride!

To avoid being caught in the "upside down" predicament on your motorcycle always look for a lender that will give you a simple interest loan on your bike. Secondly, always put some money down upfront to reduce the payments and the terms. Finally, never finance your motorcycle purchase over more than three years.

Building a Motorcycle with a Bike Kit and Custom Motorcycle Parts.

If you really want a custom chopper but don't have loads of cash to drop, why not build it yourself? Building a custom chopper is difficult, but something that can be overcome with patience, a willingness to learn, and dedication. It just takes starting with one of the many custom bike kits and adding your unique style of custom motorcycle parts and artistic style.

Where to begin:
The easiest way to kick start your custom chopper is to choose from the available custom bike kits. Using a custom bike kit isn't necessary - you could buy every part piece by piece. However, if it's your first custom chopper and you're not sure which parts to choose, custom bike kits are a good option. The kit will take care of the basics and you can use custom motorcycle parts to enhance and personalize the design.

Custom motorcycle parts:
Once you've got the base model of your bike, you can easily customize the look by swapping out parts with your own choice of custom motorcycle parts. Custom motorcycle parts that make the biggest impact on the look for the lowest overall price are mirrors, wheels, seat, handlebars and of course, the paint job.

Custom paint job:
Aside from the overall style, the one thing that will make your bike truly unique is the paint job. A lot of custom bike kits come with pre-painted tanks in a variety of slick styles. If you can't find a pre-painted style that you love with the bike design that you want, you can always sand down the tank and have it repainted in your own style.

Getting stuck:
More than likely, you're going to run into roadblocks along the way even though most custom bike kits come with detailed instructions. When this happens there are plenty of resources online with advice and forums with question and answer logs. Try documenting your own progress on a blog so that others who need answers in the future can find them on your site.

Best custom bike kits:
Ultima motorcycle kits offer a wide variety of unique styles. With a lot of custom motorcycle kits, you'll find little variation in style, but among  motorcycle kits, there is a style for just about every taste. Some of the most popular Ultima motorcycle kits are the American Pirate, the Black Cloud, the Thunder Horse, the Fat Bastard, the Fat  250, and the Wolf Daddy.

Choosing among custom bike kits:
When shopping custom bike kits, it's important to look at more than price. Custom bike kits do cost less than ready made bikes, but that doesn't mean that bottom of the barrel prices will yield a quality motorcycle. There's no problem with shopping around for competitive prices on reputable brands like Ultima motorcycle kits, but buying an unknown brand based on price alone can be trouble.

Once you've done your research and chosen a quality custom bike kit that fits your style and your price range, you'll be well on your way to enjoying the freedom and satisfaction of your own custom chopper. With the intimate knowledge you'll have of every construction detail of your bike, you'll be able to add new parts to further customize the look of your bike throughout your years of ownership. The one thing better than cruising on a chopper is the satisfaction of having built it from the ground up.

Motorbikes are the primary form of transportation in Vietnam.

In numerous cultures, motorcycles are the primary means of motorised transport. According to the Taiwanese government, for example, "the number of automobiles per ten thousand population is around 2,500, and the number of motorcycles is about 5,000."In places such as Vietnam, motorised traffic consist of mostly motorbikes due to a lack of public transport and low income levels that put automobiles out of reach for many.
The four largest motorcycle markets in the world are all in Asia: China, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam. The motorcycle is also popular in Brazil's frontier towns. Amid the global economic downturn of 2008, the motorcycle market grew by 6.5%.
Recent years have seen an increase in the popularity of motorcycles elsewhere. In the USA, registrations increased by 51% between 2000 and 2005. This is mainly attributed to increasing fuel prices and urban congestion, but is also partly due to television programmes such as reality show American Chopper, or adventure-travel shows such as Long Way Down.

Build A Custom Motorcycle Without Going Broke.

Bullet falcon motorcycle kick side,
The Bullet Falcon Motorcycle - Kick Side source:www.falconmotorcycles.com Building a custom motorcycle isn't just something fun to do; it's something that can consume your life! But that's not necessarily a bad thing, as long as it doesn't consume your wallet in the process. If you've ever read the novel "Rebuilding the Indian," you know how difficult it can be to try and build or rebuild a motorcycle from a hodgepodge of parts and pieces.Using custom motorcycle kits is a much less frustrating and less expensive way to build your custom dream bike.

Custom motorcycle kits don't take all the fun and sport out of building a motorcycle. They just provide you with all of those pieces, parts, odds, and ends that you're going to need to get your motorcycle together. You know the feeling you have when you realize that you need to run to Home Depot again for another thing to finish your home project? This realization often results in retiring to the couch and vowing to finish "tomorrow." This is the scenario that custom motorcycle kits help you to avoid.

Using custom motorcycle kits doesn't mean that you can't add all kinds of custom chrome or aftermarket Harley parts. The opportunity to add all kinds of custom chrome and custom parts is half the fun of the building your own bike. Make your selection from the various custom motorcycle kits based on the overall features of the bike you like, then swap out mirrors here, a seat there, get an amazing paint job, and soon your custom motorcycle kit becomes a truly customized bike.

Before custom bike building became as popular as it is today, you would have had to get out the saw and the blowtorch and make your own custom motorcycle parts! Today there are so many aftermarket Harley parts, exhaust systems, wheels, and other motorcycle accessories that it's easy to build your own custom bike without having to invest loads of money in equipment and machinery. The kit bike just makes things that much easier.

And no, there's nothing about starting with custom motorcycle kits that is "wimpy." The alternative is to put together a list of things that you need, and then go shopping for them all over town and on the internet until you've filled your list. You'll have to decide whether you would rather have someone else put all the essentials into one box (custom motorcycle kits) or shop for everything yourself and build it from scratch.

The money wasted in mismatched parts that don't work, the cost of gas from driving around town, and the cost of shipping parts from all over the country adds up! With a custom motorcycle kit, there is one purchase for all of your essentials, and then you can pick and choose any custom parts that you want to add or swap for a completely customized motorcycle.

If you Drive a Motorcycle, You Need Motorcycle Insurance.

Automobile insurance is very important. Most people know this and understand this. Insurance is meant to protect you, your property as well as other people and other property that you may damage in an accident. There are different kinds of insurance that cover different things but even the mot basic insurance is better than none at all.

Since insurance is so important to motor vehicles, you should also know that it is important to motorcycle riders as well. More and more people are filling the roads with motorcycles. It is a great, fast way to travel. Many people enjoy the open road and the freedom. Many people find it cheaper than driving a car. Whatever the reasons for driving one, if you have a motorcycle, you need motorcycle insurance.

The good news is that more and more auto insurance companies are offering coverage to motorcycles now so it is not as hard or as expensive to get insurance. You can find free quotes from many common auto insurance companies.

You can get quotes online from many places like Progressive. Types of motorcycle coverage vary by state so you will have to look it up for your state to know exactly what kind of insurance is available to you and required by law.

Your coverage can also vary according to how your motorcycle is classified, just like with automobiles. There are cruisers, limited production cruisers, street sports, high performance, touring and more types. How your motorcycle classifies will affect your insurance as well as the other factors.

Your driving record can also affect your rates. There are some states that do not offer motorcycle insurance such as Massachusetts, Washington DC and New Jersey. You must check with the laws in your area. Most insurance companies can tell you the laws for your state if you do not know.

Around the world, motorcycles have historically been associated with subcultures.

Some of these subcultures have been loose-knit social groups such as the cafe racers of 1950s Britain, and the Mods and Rockers of the 1960s. A few are believed to be criminal gangs.

Social motorcyclist organisations are popular and are sometimes organised geographically, focus on individual makes, or even specific models. Example motorcycle clubs include: American Motorcyclist Association, Harley Owners Group and BMW MOA. Some organisations hold large international motorcycle rallies in different parts of the world that are attended by many thousands of riders.

Whereas many social motorcycle organisations raise money for charities through organised events and rides, some other motorcycle organisations exist only for the direct benefit of others. Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) is one example. BACA assigns members to individual children to help them through difficult situations, or even stay with the child if the child is alone or frightened.[41]

In recent decades, motorcyclists have formed political lobbying organisations in order to influence legislators to introduce motorcycle-friendly legislation. One of the oldest such organisations, the British Motorcycle Action Group, was founded in 1973 specifically in response to helmet compulsion, introduced without public consultation.[42] In addition, the British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF), originally founded in 1960 as a reaction to the public perception of motorcyclists as leather-jacketed hooligans, has itself moved into political lobbying. Likewise, the U.S. has ABATE, which, like most such organisations, also works to improve motorcycle safety, as well as running the usual charity fund-raising events and rallies, often for motorcycle-related political interests.[43]

At the other end of the spectrum from the charitable organizations and the motorcycle rights activists are the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs. These are defined by the Provincial Court of Manitoba as: "Any group of motorcycle enthusiasts who have voluntarily made a commitment to band together and abide by their organizations' rigorous rules enforced by violence, who engage in activities that bring them and their club into serious conflict with society and the law".[44] The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Criminal Intelligence Service Canada have designated four MCs as Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs (OMGs), which are the Pagans, Hells Angels, Outlaws MC, and Bandidos,[45][46] known as the "Big Four".[47]
